Axios reports, citing people familiar with the plans, that Reflection AI is preparing to release its first public open-weight model "soon". It's expected to trail the most advanced US closed models at first, but to compete with the best Chinese open-weight systems such as DeepSeek and Qwen, and to be good enough for companies to build their own low-cost systems on.
Reflection was founded in March 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou. It has raised about $2 billion at a reported valuation of about $25 billion, with Nvidia leading its 2025 round. It has secured large compute deals and plans a data centre in South Korea. Axios says other Western open-weight models are also due this month.
Why it matters
This is a plan, not a release. There's no release date, licence or pricing, and the model isn't public. It signals a deliberate US push to compete in the open-weight tier that Chinese labs currently lead, but for now the story is the product.
