MirrorMe's robotic hand plays a live piano duet with a human

In a duet you cannot lag. A Shanghai company used one to test whether a robot hand can keep human time.

Shanghai's MirrorMe Technology has unveiled VIVA, a dexterous robotic hand that it says performed the world's first real-time four-hand piano duet with a human. The piece was the "Can-Can", with fast scales, trills, repeated notes and loud fortissimo strikes.

MirrorMe presents it as a test of combining foundation models with robot hardware in a task that needs precision and expression at the same time.

Why it matters

Dexterity, real-time synchronisation and expression together are a hard combination, and music is a clever way to test it. A duet gives no slack at all: the hand keeps time with the person, or it isn't playing with them.

The "world first" claim is the company's own.
