BAAI reserves an AREX-2 page on Hugging Face. It's empty

At 17:56 UTC on 29 September, the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence created a Hugging Face repository called BAAI/AREX-2. It contains a single configuration file and no model data: no model card, no weights, no benchmark and no announcement.

BAAI has a real record of releasing open weights in 2026, so a reserved name may well signal something on the way. But nothing has shipped.

Why it matters

A repository's creation date is when a name was registered, not when a model was released. Stories about "new" models often rest on exactly this kind of timestamp. Until there are weights in it, AREX-2 is a placeholder.
