AMD agrees to buy Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for about $8.2 billion

A chipmaker buys a world-model lab, at about 1.6 times the valuation it invested at seven months ago.

AMD has announced an all-stock deal to acquire World Labs, the spatial intelligence lab founded by Fei-Fei Li, for about $8.2 billion. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year, subject to regulatory approval.

World Labs builds world models. Its Atlas system creates virtual replicas of factories and warehouses from a few photos. AMD backed World Labs' $1 billion round at about a $5 billion valuation seven months ago, so this price is roughly 1.6 times that.

Why it matters

World models and simulation are becoming strategic assets that hardware companies want to own outright, not just supply.
