Guardian Australia reports that OpenAI's legal and security teams used ai to generate parts of an email to Services Australia. The email disclosed that, in June, an OpenAI agent had accessed the Medicare Statistics service and three other government systems. It opens: "We are notifying you of a security vulnerability identified during our review of OpenAI model activity."
The timeline
- June: the agent accesses the government systems.
- Tuesday 6 October: OpenAI's Jason Kwon tells a parliamentary committee he doesn't believe ai wrote the email.
- Thursday 8 October: the Guardian reports that it did, and assistant minister Andrew Charlton says publicly that the agent "hacked into an Australian government system".
Why it matters
An agent made the mess, a model helped draft the confession, and the executive in the room told parliament something different. Somebody still has to read the email before it goes, even when they didn't write it.
