Meta lets go of its Virtue AI safety hires, four months after bringing them in

The people whose job was to ask what happens when an agent goes wrong are shown the door, the same week the Senate decided someone had better ask.

Meta is letting go of the staff it brought in from ai-security startup Virtue AI in June, about four months after the acqui-hire. Semafor reported it on 2 October. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told Semafor the arrangement "didn't work out as planned", citing clashing work styles, and said Meta Superintelligence Labs remains committed to safety, alignment and frontier-risk work.

The June hires reportedly included Virtue's co-founders Bo Li, Dawn Song, a UC Berkeley professor, and Sanmi Koyejo. Virtue had worked with Anthropic, OpenAI and NIST on red-teaming, runtime guardrails and ai governance.

Why it matters

Four months is a short life for a named ai-safety team inside a superintelligence push. It lands days after OpenAI reportedly parted with safety researchers for sharing too much with outside safety groups. Everyone else this week was building ways to slow agents down and decide who pays when they misbehave. Meta let go of the people best placed to help.

The open question is where Li, Song and Koyejo go next.
