OpenAI has published a preview of GPT-5.6 Sol, which it describes as its strongest model yet, with improved agentic abilities in coding, biology and cybersecurity.
What OpenAI says
- the release will be phased, with heavier safeguards
- it spent over 700,000 A100-equivalent GPU hours on automated red-teaming for universal jailbreaks
- there is a new "max" reasoning-effort tier
- it is coordinating with the US Administration on a cyber Executive Order framework before wider availability
This rests on OpenAI's own preview page; we haven't seen independent reporting on it.
Why it matters
The frontier is still getting bigger, and here the step up in capability comes with a release that is restricted on purpose and coordinated with government. That is a different kind of launch from a normal model drop, though the changes most people will feel this week came from much smaller models.
