On the same day as the nine-loop post, Anthropic's institute published a proposal for three measurements it says the public should be able to track inside frontier labs.
The three metrics
- the share of ai research and development done by ai itself
- how well agent actions are overseen: coverage, review latency and escalation rate
- how compute is allocated, including how much goes to safety work
As a snapshot, Anthropic said that in August 2026 roughly 30,000 agents were doing research and engineering work at any one time on its most-used internal platform. It also examined its own compute mix for a week in July, and says it plans to bring in independent third-party evaluators to check the numbers. It has encouraged other labs to publish similar figures.
Why it matters
Thirty thousand agents is not a lab tinkering; it is a workforce. Auditable numbers are rare in a debate about ai improving itself that is mostly rhetoric. This went out on the same day as a flashier announcement and got far less attention.
