On 23 September, Black Forest Labs, best known for its FLUX image models, debuted FLUX 3 Action, a vision-language-action model for controlling robots. It's the lab's first move into robotics.
What it claims
- 7 billion parameters, against 16 billion for NVIDIA's Cosmos3-Nano-Policy
- runs 1.43 times faster
- tops NVIDIA's RoboLab simulation benchmark of 120 tasks
Black Forest Labs told VentureBeat it will release the weights, code, fine-tuning recipe, benchmarks and reproducible examples, including a build for the low-cost SO-101 robot arm using Hugging Face's LeRobot. The figures are the company's own, and so far only one outlet has covered it.
Why it matters
An image lab has beaten the chip giant's own policy model, on the chip giant's own benchmark, at under half the size. Once the weights are out, anyone can pull it down and run it.
